Israel Takes Control of UNRWA Training Center in East Jerusalem
(MENAFN) Israel announces that it has taken control of the Qalandia Training Center operated by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, in the area north of occupied East Jerusalem. The move prompts the Palestinian presidency to seek urgent intervention from the UN Security Council.
According to reports, Israel says the Jerusalem Municipality has started preparations for a new educational and community complex in Kafr Aqab, which authorities claim is intended to provide services to thousands of Palestinian residents.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry argues that the land has been under the ownership of the Jewish National Fund since 1937 and was later designated for use by the Jerusalem Municipality as part of the planned development.
The proposed complex is expected to eventually contain several public facilities, including schools, a mosque, sports centers and health services.
Israeli authorities also accuse UNRWA of occupying and fencing off the property for decades despite allegedly lacking legal ownership of the land. The government cites legislation approved by the Knesset in October 2024 that prohibits UNRWA from operating within Israel.
UNRWA disputes Israel’s position, maintaining that the Qalandia Training Center is a United Nations facility and therefore enjoys protection under international law.
The Palestinian presidency strongly condemns the seizure and urges the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting. It calls for “binding decisions and measures” aimed at stopping Israeli actions targeting UN facilities and institutions in East Jerusalem and the Qalandia area.
