Qatar, Jordan Back Syria’s Removal from US Terrorism List
(MENAFN) Qatar and Jordan welcome Washington’s decision to take Syria off its list of state sponsors of terrorism, saying the measure could contribute to the country’s recovery, reconstruction and broader regional stability.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry describes the decision as “a positive development” that could strengthen efforts to promote stability in Syria and throughout the region.
“The decision also supports the path of a political settlement in line with international legitimacy resolutions and the aspirations of the Syrian people,” it added.
Doha also reiterates its commitment to Syria’s unity, sovereignty and independence, while expressing continued support for the Syrian population as they seek greater security, stability and economic prosperity.
Jordan similarly welcomes the US move, describing it as “an important step” toward helping Syria rebuild and advance its recovery and development efforts.
Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Fuad al-Majali says Amman remains committed to supporting Syria’s reconstruction on a basis that “preserve its unity, sovereignty, security, stability and territorial integrity, while safeguarding the rights of all Syrians.”
The reactions follow Washington’s announcement that Syria has been removed from its terrorism designation. The US also ends the classification of the al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organization.
The US Treasury Department supports the decision, which is expected to ease some of the obstacles facing Syria as it seeks to rebuild and strengthen its international relations.
