Syria's YPG Dissolves as US Envoy Barrack Hails "United" Nation Push

(MENAFN) America's top diplomat for Syria signaled Tuesday that a major obstacle to national unity had been cleared, praising the YPG terror group's announced self-dissolution as evidence that a "united Syria for all takes shape."

Writing on X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk's company, US Special Envoy Tom Barrack framed the development as part of President Donald Trump's broader regional strategy, describing it as Trump's "ongoing Middle East Plan – A steadfast partner steps forward into a national framework, and a united Syria for all takes shape."

According to Barrack, Trump's leadership was instrumental in clearing the path for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to fold into state institutions in what he called an "orderly" process.

The envoy characterized the shift as one that is "transforming past division into lasting partnership and restoring to the Syrian people the opportunity to shape their common future."

Barrack also singled out two Kurdish figures for praise, saying: "Recognizing the Kurdish language in education and securing substantive roles for our valued partners Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed within the Syrian government pays due respect to their leadership, the sacrifices of our Kurdish partners, and the constructive contribution they have made to regional stability—turning yesterday's separations into tomorrow's shared purpose."

Rather than framing the outcome as a win for one side over another, the envoy described genuine reconciliation between "former counterparts with differing points," who he said had struck a diplomatic bargain aimed at strengthening Syria's sovereignty.

He summarized the ambition in blunt terms: "One army, one government, one state."

The envoy's remarks came hours after YPG leader Mazloum Abdi confirmed the group's disbandment during a press briefing earlier Tuesday.

The dissolution follows a Jan. 29 agreement between Syria's governing administration and the YPG, which established a ceasefire and set a framework for the militia's phased absorption into official state structures.
