Zelenskyy Appeals to China for Bigger Role in Ending Russia's War
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that Kyiv is looking to China to take on a more forceful diplomatic role as part of efforts to bring an end to Russia's war against Ukraine.
The remarks came after Chinese President Xi Jinping sent congratulations to Ukraine on its Independence Day, marking 35 years since the country broke away from the Soviet Union.
"I thank Chinese leader Xi Jinping for his congratulations to Ukraine on our most important national holiday," Zelenskyy said.
He called independence an "unconditional value" not only for Ukrainians but for sovereign nations more broadly, and said Kyiv placed real value on its relationship with Beijing — one he described as having been built over 35 years on mutual respect and recognition of each people's values.
"We count on further cooperation and on China playing a strong diplomatic role in bringing Russia's war against our country to an end. Peace can be our shared achievement," he added.
The appeal lands as Ukraine keeps pushing for heavier international diplomatic pressure on Moscow, alongside broader support for a lasting peace settlement. China, for its part, has continued to maintain close ties with Russia throughout the conflict.
