Egypt Urges Full Implementation of US-Iran Memorandum
(MENAFN) Egypt underscored the urgency of implementing the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and de-escalating regional tensions, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.
The matter came up during a phone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, according to a ministry statement, which said the conversation centered on regional developments and efforts to contain escalating tensions.
Abdelatty emphasized the importance of honoring the US-Iran memorandum and following through on the commitments it lays out, describing the agreement as a constructive step toward de-escalation and toward reinforcing security and stability across the Middle East.
He also called for stepped-up regional and international efforts to defuse tensions and keep the conflict from spreading further, stressing the need to prioritize political and diplomatic channels — and dialogue — in resolving the region's crises, the ministry said.
The two officials additionally addressed the security and freedom of navigation along international waterways. Abdelatty pressed for safe, unrestricted passage, warning against disruptions to shipping and calling for adherence to relevant international law.
He highlighted how critical freedom of navigation is to global trade, supply chains and energy security, and stressed the importance of insulating international waterways from the fallout of regional tensions and escalation.
The diplomatic push follows a turbulent stretch in US-Iran relations. In late February, the US and Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran, prompting Tehran to strike back at Israeli and American military targets throughout the region. By mid-June, Washington and Tehran had signed the memorandum with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, though implementation later stalled over disagreements involving the Strait of Hormuz. Last month, the US resumed military strikes on Iran, and Tehran retaliated by hitting American military assets across several Arab states aligned with Washington.
