Qatar Slams Israeli Defense Chief's Entry Into Syrian Territory

(MENAFN) Qatar has condemned Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz's entry into Syrian territory, branding it a flagrant breach of Syria's sovereignty.

The Qatari Foreign Ministry issued its rebuke Tuesday after Katz crossed into the Syrian buffer zone in the southwest — a move that came just days after Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Israeli Mossad chief Roman Gofman met in Jordan's capital, Amman, to discuss easing tensions between the two nations.

"The State of Qatar strongly condemns Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz's illegal entry into Syrian territory and transgression of international borders," the ministry said in a statement.

Doha characterized the incursion as "a violation of the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic and its territorial integrity."

The ministry called on the international community "to move swiftly to compel Israel to adhere to international legitimacy resolutions, particularly the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, and to end its repeated aggression on Syrian territories, to prevent escalation and tension in the region."

Katz, for his part, declared during the visit that Israel "will not leave Mount Hermon or the security zone as long as there are jihadist threats to the State of Israel," his office said.

The Israeli military seized control of the buffer zone in December 2024, a move Damascus has said breached the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between the two countries. Israel has separately occupied most of the Golan Heights since 1967.

Following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in late 2024, Israel declared the Disengagement Agreement null and void and moved to seize the buffer zone along with other positions, including the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.

Israeli forces have since carried out near-daily incursions into southern Syria, particularly across Daraa and Quneitra provinces, involving arrests, checkpoint deployments and searches of residents.
