IAEA to Launch ATLAS Initiative Advancing Nuclear Power at Sea
(MENAFN) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi announced Tuesday that the agency is gearing up to roll out a fresh initiative aimed at expanding civilian nuclear technology use on the water.
Grossi said he sat down with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright in Washington, DC, ahead of the debut of Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) — an IAEA-led effort designed to clear the path for deploying civil nuclear applications at sea, from nuclear-powered vessels to floating nuclear power plants.
Grossi said the initiative has the potential to boost global trade and deliver energy to remote communities and industries that need it most.
"Delighted to be with @ENERGY@SecretaryWright in Washington DC ahead of tomorrow's launch of ATLAS," he wrote on the US social media platform X.
He thanked the US for backing the initiative and noted that his talks with Wright also touched on nuclear non-proliferation matters.
Those discussions extended to Iran's nuclear program as well as Grossi's recent trip to Syria, where he said "important progress" was being made.
The ATLAS initiative is set to be formally unveiled at an IAEA ministerial-level event hosted by the US in Washington, DC, running Aug. 26-27.
