Colombia Quake Death Toll Hits 331 as 240 Remain Missing
(MENAFN) The death toll from the devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that rocked western Colombia has climbed to 331, according to updated figures released Tuesday by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD).
The agency reported that 240 people are still unaccounted for, while 4,449 have sustained injuries and 364 survivors have been pulled from the rubble alive. Authorities have now officially registered 406,273 people from 188,034 families as affected, spanning 494 municipalities across 16 of Colombia's 32 departments.
The quake struck at 7:34 a.m. local time (1234 GMT) on Aug. 10, marking the most powerful seismic event to hit the country this century. Its epicenter was pinpointed near San Jose del Palmar in the Pacific department of Choco, at an intermediate depth of roughly 110 kilometers (68 miles).
Destruction from the disaster has cut a wide swath across western Colombia's housing and infrastructure. UNGRD's latest tally shows 33,275 homes reduced to rubble entirely, with another 185,889 damaged.
The blow to public services has been just as severe: 376 health centers, 3,819 schools and educational facilities, and 4,337 community buildings have all sustained damage, the agency said.
Transportation and water systems have taken a major hit as well, with 440 roads, 74 vehicle bridges, 17 pedestrian bridges, five airports and 119 water-supply systems damaged or disrupted.
Animals have not been spared either — the latest assessment counts 2,149 affected and 2,949 rescued.
UNGRD cautioned that all figures remain preliminary, noting that local authorities and emergency response agencies are still working to consolidate damage assessments as the crisis unfolds.
