Iran Says Pakistan Army Chief Advances Diplomatic Efforts

(MENAFN) Iran describes Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir’s recent trip to Tehran as highly successful, saying the visit produces important diplomatic gains whose impact is expected to emerge in the near future.

Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communications and information at the Iranian President’s Office, rejects speculation that the visit failed to achieve meaningful results.

“Contrary to some inaccurate media speculation, the visit of Field Marshal Asim Munir, the army chief of friendly Pakistan, to Iran was highly productive and yielded significant diplomatic achievements, the results of which will become apparent soon,” Tabatabaei said.

The visit also reportedly involves discussions over efforts to revive a stalled political process between Iran and the United States. Abbas Golrou, head of the Iranian parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, says Munir delivers a message from Washington calling on Tehran to return to the Islamabad memorandum.

According to Golrou, the US asks Pakistan to communicate with Iranian officials and encourage them to resume negotiations and return to the political track.

“Asim Munir conveyed a message to Iran on behalf of the US that Iran should return to the memorandum,” Golrou said.

Golrou adds that Washington has continued sending messages to Tehran through both direct and indirect channels regarding negotiations. At the same time, he says the US is maintaining pressure through threats and the introduction of additional sanctions.
