Germany Finds Drone, Explosive Material Near Airport
(MENAFN) German authorities are investigating the possibility that several drones were involved in a suspected attack near Leipzig Airport after another unmanned aircraft and a potentially military-grade explosive substance were reportedly discovered in the area.
Investigators currently believe the incident may have involved multiple drones rather than a single aircraft, according to reports.
The first drone was located inside the airport grounds, while another is believed to have possibly collided with a DHL cargo aircraft.
A third drone, which had not previously been publicly disclosed, was reportedly discovered during the evening of Aug. 14 in a field near Kabelsketal in the Saale district of Saxony-Anhalt. The location lies directly beside the western section of Leipzig Airport.
Security sources said forensic specialists from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office arrived at the site on Aug. 14 together with additional police personnel. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office declined to provide details when questioned about the investigation.
Investigators reportedly made another significant discovery the following day, finding a substance that initial examinations indicated could be around 50 grams of hexogen, a highly explosive compound used in military applications.
Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the drones and the suspected explosive material as part of the broader investigation into the incident.
