China Calls on US to Preserve Iran Cooperation

(MENAFN) China has called on the United States to avoid interfering with Beijing’s legitimate cooperation with Iran following Washington’s introduction of a new sanctions campaign aimed at cutting Tehran off from the international financial system.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian says China’s dealings with Iran remain consistent with international law and therefore should not be targeted by US measures.

“China’s cooperation with Iran is conducted within the framework of international law and should not be disrupted,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

Beijing also warns that the expanded sanctions could create broader consequences for the international economy. Lin argues that increasing economic pressure will not resolve the conflict and instead urges the parties involved to pursue negotiations.

“Economic wars and maximum pressure are not the solution,” Lin said, when asked about the new sanctions regime launched by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday.

According to Lin, the latest measures could intensify tensions and increase the possibility that the conflict affects countries beyond those directly involved.

Lin said such moves “will only lead to escalation and risks of spillover, which will disrupt the global economic and financial order and harm the legitimate interests of other countries.”

China says the immediate priority should be reducing tensions and bringing the parties back to diplomatic engagement rather than expanding economic confrontation.

“The pressing task is to facilitate de-escalation and return to dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible,” said the spokesman, stressing that China “will take necessary measures to safeguard its rights and interests.”
