Pakistan Reports Progress in Efforts to Revive US-Iran Talks

(MENAFN) Pakistan says its latest diplomatic engagement in Tehran produces “significant progress” as Islamabad continues working to restart direct negotiations between the United States and Iran over their stalled memorandum.

Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s army chief, travels to Tehran as part of the country’s renewed mediation efforts. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who joins the visit, says their meeting with the Iranian president is constructive and encouraging.

“Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and I had a very positive and productive meeting with the President of Iran,” Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who accompanied Munir, said in a post on US social media company X.

Naqvi says the discussions end on a positive note and that substantial movement is achieved, although he does not disclose specific details about what has been agreed.

“Significant progress was made, and the meeting concluded on a highly positive note. We remain hopeful that this momentum will help pave the way for further progress and lasting peace in the region,” he added, without providing details on the progress.

The talks focus on the conflict between Iran and the US, escalating tensions across the Middle East and possible steps toward resolving the dispute. Pakistani officials also discuss measures that could restore the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and ultimately contribute to a broader settlement.

“Our discussion focused on the Iran US conflict, tensions in the Middle East and the way forward, as well as the steps needed by both sides for restoration of the Islamabad MoU thereby leading to comprehensive settlement of the conflict,” Naqvi said.

According to Naqvi, the Iranian president openly presents Tehran’s position and concerns during the meeting. The two sides then hold what he describes as a productive discussion aimed at addressing the outstanding issues.
