Nevada Challenges Trump Plan Over Colorado River Cuts
(MENAFN) Nevada has taken legal action against the administration of US President Donald Trump over a federal proposal that would require the state and two other states to significantly reduce their use of Colorado River water. The lawsuit represents the first court challenge to Washington’s latest effort to address the river’s worsening water shortages.
In a filing before a federal court, Nevada argues that the drought management measures developed by the Interior Department could have “devastating environmental, socioeconomic, and health and human safety impacts to southern Nevada and its citizens.”
The federal plan emerges after the seven states that depend on the Colorado River fail to reach a joint agreement on how to manage increasingly severe shortages, according to reports.
The conflict concerns a crucial water source serving approximately 40 million people across the southwestern US and Mexico. Nevada authorities warn that the proposed measures could reduce the state’s yearly water allocation by as much as 71%.
The Colorado River is particularly important to southern Nevada, supplying around 90% of the water consumed by Las Vegas and nearby communities.
“This isn’t about political posturing,” Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo said. “This is a matter of survival for a community that represents about two-thirds of our state’s citizens and the lion’s share of its economy.”
The lawsuit sets up a legal confrontation between Nevada and the federal government as officials seek to balance water conservation requirements with the needs of communities and economies that rely heavily on the increasingly strained river system.
