Turkish Cypriot Leader Defends Barcelona Youth Camp

(MENAFN) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel has criticized efforts by a far-right Greek Cypriot political group to prevent a youth football training camp organized by Spanish club Barcelona from taking place in the territory.

Barcelona has announced that its youth training program is scheduled to take place in the Turkish Cypriot-administered area on Sept. 11, according to information published by the club.

The far-right National Popular Front, known as ELAM, has urged the Greek Cypriot administration’s Foreign Ministry to intervene with Spanish authorities and seek to stop the event.

In a written response, Ustel condemned the campaign against the Barcelona training camp as well as similar efforts directed at the Zamna Music Festival, which is also due to take place in the TRNC.

According to Ustel, these actions demonstrate the “true intentions” of groups within the Greek Cypriot administration that oppose Turkish Cypriots developing international connections, taking part in global events and presenting their cultural and artistic activities abroad.

“There is no longer a society before them that they expect to remain isolated,” Ustel said. “There is a Turkish Cypriot people who embrace their state, look to the future with confidence and have the determination to strengthen their ties with the world.”

The Turkish Cypriot premier argued that attempts to prevent international events from being held in the territory demonstrate that the fundamental position of Greek Cypriot political circles toward Turkish Cypriots has not changed.
