Venezuela Reports Rising Earthquake Toll as Recovery Continues
(MENAFN) The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that hit Venezuela in late June has climbed to 6,509, while authorities continue efforts to restore damaged communities, according to officials.
National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced the updated number as reconstruction and emergency operations remain underway across the country following the devastating seismic events.
Rodriguez said rescue teams have so far saved 6,462 people since the earthquakes struck. Meanwhile, hospitals across Venezuela have provided medical care to 226,696 people affected by the disaster.
Government teams have also inspected 60,785 residential properties to determine the extent of the damage. Officials found that 35,545 homes can still be occupied, while 14,239 have been placed under restrictions and another 11,001 are considered seriously unsafe.
As part of the resettlement effort, the government has provided 335 newly built homes to families forced to leave their residences because of the destruction.
Debris removal is also progressing, with cleanup crews having cleared approximately 600,790.70 tons of wreckage so far. This represents 28.61% of the total amount of debris estimated to have been generated by the earthquakes.
