Regional Nations Reaffirm Commitment to Open Straits
(MENAFN) Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore have reiterated their shared commitment to preserving the Straits of Malacca and Singapore as safe, open and freely accessible routes for international maritime traffic.
The three countries renewed their position during a cooperation forum held in Singapore, emphasizing that the waterways remain vital passages for global navigation. They also reaffirmed their status as Straits Used for International Navigation, where the right of transit passage is recognized under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and customary international law.
The coastal nations further stressed that maintaining safe navigation and protecting the marine environment is a shared responsibility. They highlighted the contribution of user states, international organizations, maritime companies and other relevant parties in supporting security and environmental protection across the two waterways.
"All three littoral states have reaffirmed their recognition that keeping the waterways safe, secure and open was in everyone’s best interests," said Singapore Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow.
During his opening address, Siow described the Strait of Malacca and the Singapore Strait as a "shining" example of the results countries can achieve through strong cooperation and close coordination, according to official statements.
