IIT Kanpur's Gangwal School Of Medical Sciences Gets ₹300 Crore Additional Funds From Indigo Co-Founder Rakesh Gangwal

(MENAFN- Live Mint) IIT Kanpur's Gangwal School of Medical Sciences has received major financial support. Rakesh Gangwal, IndiGo's co-founder, contributed an additional ₹300 crore.

This builds on his earlier ₹100 crore contribution in 2022. His total commitment to the school now stands at ₹400 crore.

Rakesh Gangwal will provide matching grants against contributions from other supporters. This encourages broader participation from alumni and philanthropists alike.

The initiative aims to advance medical education, research and healthcare innovation. This aligns with IIT Kanpur's broader vision for MedTech development.

Development plans include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on campus. A proposed 200-bed cancer care research centre also features prominently.

These facilities will support medical education alongside clinical research work. They aim to unite doctors, researchers and technology experts under one roof.

Prof. Manindra Agrawal, IIT Kanpur's Director, expressed deep gratitude for this support. He highlighted the potential for interdisciplinary research to transform healthcare delivery.

He specifically noted benefits for Uttar Pradesh's healthcare landscape. He credited Gangwal's earlier contribution for setting initial plans in motion.

“This additional contribution of ₹300 crore by Mr Gangwal will help us bring this vision into reality sooner. This support reinforces Mr Gangwal's commitment and trust in the Institute. On behalf of IIT Kanpur, I extend our sincere gratitude.”

Prof. Anil K Lalwani, recently appointed Dean, also praised this gift. He called it a reminder of the transformative power of individual philanthropy.

It's been more than 50 years since Rakesh Gangwal did his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kanpur. After graduating in 1975, he did his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

He has previously worked in US Airways, Air France and United Airlines. In 2006, Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia launched InterGlobe Aviation. The company runs IndiGo, India's largest airline.

He expressed 'honour' at being part of this venture. He called it an 'innovative, first-of-its-kind medical institution'.
