Hamas Rejects Israeli Threats Over Gaza Kites, Balloons
(MENAFN) Hamas rejects Israeli warnings concerning kites and balloons launched from Gaza, accusing Israel of using the issue to create justifications for continued attacks and pressure on Palestinian civilians, particularly children.
The statement follows threats from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz to carry out further assassinations and remove Palestinians from parts of Gaza if the launching of kites and balloons toward Israel continues.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem says the Israeli warnings are based on “claims and threats” concerning objects that are largely children's toys used by displaced families living in camps.
“These threats, based on fabricated pretexts, are an attempt to justify the continuation of aggression and violations against our people, reaching the point of threatening children in the Gaza Strip,” he said.
Qassem calls on the US administration, mediators and ceasefire guarantors to pressure Israel to stop what he describes as attacks that are jeopardizing the truce. He maintains that the Palestinian side is fully adhering to the ceasefire.
Several kites are reportedly discovered in recent days near Israeli communities located along the Gaza border, with Israeli authorities saying the objects originated from the enclave.
The Israeli army says four kites found near the Nahal Oz settlement contain no suspicious materials and “posed no danger to the public.”
Hamas maintains that the Israeli response is disproportionate and warns that threats against civilians could further undermine the fragile ceasefire.
