Egyptian Intelligence Chief Meets Palestinian Vice President for Talks
(MENAFN) Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad meets with Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh and a senior delegation on Sunday to discuss Palestinian affairs, including preparations for upcoming elections and efforts to strengthen national unity.
The Palestinian delegation includes Palestinian National Council Chairman Rawhi Fattouh and intelligence chief Majed Faraj, according to reports.
The talks take place in Egypt as part of Cairo's ongoing efforts to encourage reconciliation among Palestinian factions and address political challenges facing the Palestinian cause.
Discussions cover the latest developments in the occupied West Bank as well as preparations for upcoming Palestinian electoral milestones. Both sides agree to coordinate national efforts in response to the challenges confronting the Palestinian people.
The meeting follows comments by al-Sheikh a day earlier, when he says legislative elections will proceed according to schedule but notes that an alternative arrangement is available if holding the vote becomes impossible.
Speaking to Palestinian journalists in Ramallah on Saturday, al-Sheikh explains that if elections cannot take place because voting is blocked or disrupted in the Gaza Strip or elsewhere in the Palestinian territories, the alternative would involve establishing the Palestinian National Council through national consensus.
