TRNC Defends Energy Cooperation with Türkiye Amid UN Dispute

(MENAFN) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Prime Minister Unal Ustel criticizes the Greek Cypriot Administration for submitting a complaint to the UN over an agreement between the TRNC and Türkiye concerning the construction of a natural gas pipeline.

Ustel says efforts to challenge the agreement will not prevent Turkish Cypriots from pursuing economic development, closer ties with Türkiye or plans aimed at strengthening their energy security.

“You cannot prevent the development of the Turkish Cypriot people, the strengthening of our ties with our motherland Türkiye, or the steps we are taking for our energy future," Ustel said.

"Let them complain as much as they want. Together with our motherland Türkiye, we will continue to protect the rights of our people, strengthen our country, and build our future together," he added.

The TRNC prime minister argues that the Greek Cypriot Administration has entered into numerous agreements over the years without taking the wishes of Turkish Cypriots into consideration. He therefore describes its objection to the TRNC-Türkiye energy agreement as inconsistent.

“The TRNC has the will to make decisions concerning its own future, development, and energy security. The Greek Cypriot administration cannot decide in which areas we will cooperate with our motherland, Türkiye,” he added.

Ustel maintains that the Greek Cypriot side is primarily concerned about the growing relationship between the TRNC and Türkiye. He accuses the administration of denying Turkish Cypriots rights that it simultaneously claims for itself.

The TRNC government says it will continue pursuing energy projects and bilateral cooperation with Türkiye despite objections raised through international channels.
