US Mediates Syria-Israel Talks in Jordan to Reduce Tensions
(MENAFN) Senior Syrian and Israeli officials hold talks in Jordan on Sunday under US mediation as part of efforts to reduce tensions following recent Israeli attacks on Syrian territory.
The Syrian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and includes senior officials from the country's General Intelligence Directorate and Military Intelligence, according to reports.
The meeting takes place amid increased tensions in southern Syria and follows recent Israeli strikes. The discussions aim to promote stability inside Syria and across the wider region.
The talks focus on developing “practical mechanisms to halt Israeli attacks, arrests and targeting operations” while seeking to restart negotiations over a security agreement. Such an agreement could eventually provide a foundation for “a more comprehensive future agreement.”
During the discussions, the Syrian side emphasizes that Syria remains “a sovereign state” with “the full right to rebuild and develop its national army and determine its alliances and partnerships in accordance with its national interests.”
Damascus also makes clear that it “will not accept any arrangements or mechanisms that would restrict these sovereign rights.”
Syria further reaffirms its position that “the occupied Golan is Syrian territory.” However, officials maintain that determining its final status and discussing the process required to address it remains “premature at the current stage.”
The Jordan meeting represents a renewed diplomatic effort to contain tensions and establish security arrangements between Syria and Israel following the recent escalation.
