Hawk Fire Spreads Rapidly Near Reno as Evacuations Expand
(MENAFN) A rapidly spreading wildfire in Nevada grows to more than 10,500 acres on Sunday, prompting widespread evacuations and the declaration of a state of emergency as flames approach populated areas near Reno.
The Hawk Fire is first reported shortly before 11:30 a.m. Saturday near Hawk Meadow Trail, roughly 1 mile north of Cold Creek Trail in the Somersett area northwest of Reno. The blaze expands rapidly, reaching 10,523 acres by 9:30 p.m. as evacuation areas widen.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declares an emergency in Washoe County because of the growing threat to homes and other structures.
“I have declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as we respond to the Hawk Fire, which is spreading quickly and threatening homes and structures,” Lombardo said.
Authorities close US 395 between Parr Boulevard and Red Rock Road because of the wildfire and advise motorists to stay away from the affected area while using alternative routes.
Additional evacuation orders are issued for parts of the Somersett community, including areas north of Somersett Parkway extending toward Robb Drive. Other affected neighborhoods stretch from north of W. 7th Street to N. McCarran Boulevard.
Residents in the expanding evacuation zones are urged to leave as officials continue responding to the fast-moving fire and its threat to nearby communities.
