Iran Advances Plan to Charge Ships Using Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Iran's parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee approves a measure that would enable Tehran to impose fees on vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz as part of proposed legislation concerning the strategic waterway.
The committee continues examining a draft law known as the “Strategic Action Plan to Ensure the Security and Development of the Strait of Hormuz,” with members approving Article 3 after consideration of the provision was delayed during an earlier session.
Under the proposed measure, vessels could be charged for a range of services provided while navigating the strait. These include navigation and environmental services, fuel supplies in certain circumstances, insurance, security and other related services.
The payments would apply to ships from countries authorized to transit the waterway and could be made in Iranian rials or another currency specified by Tehran.
Committee spokesman Hassan Qashqavi says the legislation considers the rights of countries bordering the Strait of Hormuz.
He also says the draft recognizes the principle of freedom of navigation under international law and relevant regulations, while stressing the importance of respecting the security and sovereignty of coastal states and safeguarding their rights.
