Duffy Labels Canada’s Trade Dispute with Trump Foolish
(MENAFN) US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy describes Canada's decision to confront President Donald Trump over trade as a major strategic mistake, arguing that the dispute could cause serious damage to the Canadian economy.
“To think that they're going to go to war with Donald Trump and actually win that war with the US ... I think it's foolish on their part,” Duffy said.
Duffy argues that Canada depends on bilateral trade significantly more than the United States does and accuses Ottawa of relying heavily on American security support. He also criticizes Canada's military capabilities and healthcare system.
"It's a country that doesn't have a military. It has a country that has a single-payer healthcare system that's failing."
The US official predicts that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will return to negotiations “very, very quickly” after the economic consequences of Washington's tariffs become more apparent.
The latest comments follow Trump's criticism of Canada, in which he claims the country seeks advantages from its relationship with the United States while also maintaining its own independent status. Trump also accuses Ottawa of imposing substantial tariffs on American agricultural products.
Carney, meanwhile, recently describes the growing dispute between the two countries as being “at war” over trade. He accuses Washington of attempting to “hurt and divide” Canada and calls the escalation of tariffs a “miscalculation.”
