Nordic Football Associations Withdraw Confidence in Infantino
(MENAFN) Six Nordic football associations say they have “lost confidence” in FIFA President Gianni Infantino after his proposal to bring private investment into commercial interests connected to the World Cup fails to move forward.
The football bodies representing Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands issue a joint statement following a meeting in Helsinki, raising “serious concerns” about FIFA's governance and the way major decisions are made at the organization's senior level.
“The six Nordic football associations have lost confidence in the FIFA President and have serious concerns about the governance and high-level decision-making of the organisation,” the statement said.
The associations express strong support for UEFA and measures jointly advocated by its national member associations. They also call for firm protections to prevent private ownership from influencing FIFA's governance structure or competitions.
“We expect that FIFA provides binding assurances that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership,” the statement said.
The Nordic organizations also back calls from the Asian Football Confederation, CONCACAF and UEFA for an independent review conducted by an outside party into the circumstances surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.
“We also support the demand put forward by AFC, CONCACAF and UEFA, for a fully third-party review of the events surrounding the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal.”
