Araghchi Says Iran Faces Familiar US Economic Pressure
(MENAFN) Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran considers Washington's economic pressure another repetition of measures previously used against Iran and believes it knows how to respond.
Speaking during a visit to the mausoleum of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in Tehran, Araghchi says the measures described by US President Donald Trump as an “economic operation” do not represent a new strategy.
He argues that Washington has previously issued threats of military action against Iran before eventually returning to similar policies it had used in the past.
According to Araghchi, the move away from threats such as “we will strike and do this and that” and back toward earlier economic measures demonstrates that Washington has failed to find alternative approaches for dealing with Tehran.
“They cannot think of any other solution in confronting the great Iranian people, so they repeatedly put forward the same old plans,” Araghchi said.
He also calls for Washington to change its approach and engage with Iran through respectful dialogue and fair negotiations.
“They must understand that there is no path other than speaking to the Iranian people with respect and finding a solution based on justice and dignity,” he added.
Trump announces this week that he intends to launch “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” while describing his maximum-pressure campaign against Iran as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
