Australia Detects First Bird Flu Case in Mammal
(MENAFN) Australia confirms its first known case of bird flu in a mammal after a long-nosed fur seal found in South Australia tests positive for the virus.
The animal is discovered near Beachport, around 300 kilometers south of Adelaide, according to federal authorities.
"Athough this is a concerning development, it is not unexpected for us to start to see infection in other wildlife, particularly in marine mammals, particularly in areas where there are high infection rates in wild birds," Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says.
Officials believe the seal likely contracts the virus through contact with infected wild birds or an environment contaminated by them. Collins adds that the finding does not appear to be connected to any other reports involving sick or dead marine mammals.
Australia has recorded 298 confirmed H5 bird flu infections since the outbreak began, with South Australia accounting for 194 of those cases.
"At this stage there is no evidence of infection in our poultry or agriculture systems," Collins says.
