Strong Quake Strikes Eastern Japan, Causing Injuries
(MENAFN) A magnitude 5.9 earthquake strikes eastern Japan early Sunday, leaving more than 20 people injured and causing disruptions to rail transportation.
The earthquake originates in the southern part of Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 68 kilometers, according to official information. No tsunami warning is issued following the tremor.
The quake reaches lower 5 on Japan's seven-level seismic intensity scale in parts of Ibaraki, as well as in central Tokyo. The same intensity is also recorded in areas of Saitama and Chiba prefectures.
More than 20 people suffer injuries, including a young man and a woman in her 70s in Saitama, north of Tokyo. Authorities also report nine injured people in Kanagawa and four in Chiba.
Rail services face delays after the earthquake, with some trains operating at slower speeds as a precaution. Several express services run by Tobu Railway also remain suspended.
