Engineer Picks Passion Over A Paycheck Makes Costly Switch To Startup - 'Might Have Taken A Wrong Decision But...'

But for one young engineer from a Tier-3 college, the "golden opportunity" turned out to be a gilded cage.

In a brutally honest viral Reddit post starting with the confession,“I am an idiot,” this professional laid bare the ultimate modern dilemma: choosing between a stable paycheck and personal passion.

Securing a ₹4.5 LPA package at an automation MNC is a massive win for a core branch graduate. The job came with the shiny promises of "foreign travel" and "good pay."

Yet, the reality of the daily grind was suffocating for the young professional because the role had nothing to do with their true interest: electronics.

The Redditor shared that they tried to force themselves to fit the mould, and said,“I tried to suppress my passion, saying s**t like it's a MNC, foreign travel, good pay, it's a golden opportunity, it's time to leave my childish dreams behind and start living in reality.”

Despite the external markers of success, the internal toll was heavy, the Redditor said. The gruelling schedule-six-day work weeks, four hours of daily commuting, and unpredictable shifts lasting until 2 AM-exacerbated the misery.

“I can rant about the company being toxic, 9-hour work week, unplanned overtime (till 2 am) work to meet project deadlines a few times and coming again at 9 am, 6-day work week, 4 hours of travel per day, etc, etc,” the engineer wrote.

However, the Redditor admitted that the core issue was a fundamental“lack of interest all along.”

Survival became about watching the clock.“Every day I used to look for 6pm and break times,” they confessed, adding that they would constantly“fantasise about quitting the company and disappearing.”

After just two months, the engineer made a choice that defied traditional career logic: they resigned to join a startup for a reduced ₹3 LPA package, secured through a senior's referral.

The backlash was immediate.

The young professional said their parents "scolded the s**t out of me," urging them to beg HR to reverse the“hasty decision.”

But the pay cut bought something an MNC salary could not afford: alignment and mental relief.

The Redditor openly admitted to experiencing“self-doubt” and being“scared as hell”. Yet, beneath the anxiety, there was a profound realisation:“I might have taken a wrong decision, but I finally feel free and happy.”
