Israeli Settlements Expand as West Bank Control Grows

(MENAFN) The number of Israeli settlements and outposts across the occupied West Bank has risen to 592, while Israel now exercises control over roughly 42% of the territory, according to a Palestinian government body.

The Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission says its latest figures highlight the continuing expansion of Israeli settlements and the growing control of Palestinian land.

The commission estimates that about 780,000 Israeli settlers are currently living across the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem. Around 333,600 are based in settlements in Jerusalem, while approximately 446,400 reside elsewhere in the West Bank.

The settlements are spread across 192 established settlements and 400 outposts, including 231 pastoral outposts, the commission says.

It adds that official Israeli orders indicate control over about 42% of the West Bank, which covers approximately 5,660 square kilometers.

The commission also says Israel controls around 71% of Area C, while its control extends to as much as 91% of the Palestinian Jordan Valley.
