Carney Says New US Tariffs Seek to Hurt, Divide Canada
(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accuses the US of using new tariffs to harm and divide Canada, calling the measures a miscalculation and pledging a dollar-for-dollar response.
“The new US tariffs are designed to hurt and divide us,” Carney said. “They’re a miscalculation because Canadians will always take care of each other.”
Canada plans to impose counter-tariffs on a range of US products, while Carney says Ottawa will not surrender “exclusive access” to its critical minerals.
The Canadian leader also says trade negotiations with Washington have been suspended after the US made demands that Ottawa could not accept.
Meanwhile, the US accuses Canada of abandoning a nearly completed agreement that would have further reduced tariffs on Canadian exports to the American market.
