Four Migrants Dead, Others Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Tunisia

(MENAFN) Tunisian authorities have recovered the bodies of four irregular migrants after a boat carrying 15 people capsized off the southeastern coast near Ben Guerdane, a rights group said Saturday.

Mostafa Abdelkebir, head of the Tunisian Observatory for Human Rights, told media that the group of 15 migrants had departed Wednesday from the coasts of Ben Guerdane and Zarzis in the southeastern town of Medenine, attempting to reach Italy by sea, when their vessel capsized.

Abdelkebir said security forces managed to rescue one of the missing migrants on Friday, and that search operations for the remaining missing individuals are still underway.

Tunisia remains one of the primary departure points for irregular migrants attempting the Mediterranean crossing into Europe. Migration attempts have, however, dropped sharply over the past two years as Tunisian authorities have intensified their crackdown on migration and tightened maritime border controls.
