Yemen Forces Defuse Houthi Naval Mine in Bab al-Mandab
(MENAFN) Yemeni authorities announced Saturday that they had discovered a naval mine planted by the Houthi group in a critical stretch of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, narrowly averting a potential threat to maritime traffic.
A naval unit tied to the government-aligned National Resistance Forces "managed to eliminate the danger of a naval mine planted by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Bab al-Mandab," an unnamed military source told the official news agency.
The source said the mine had been located in a "vital area of the international shipping lane," after which naval forces disarmed it and carried out the necessary steps to neutralize the threat.
Describing the discovery as "a dangerous development in Houthi threats to the security of navigation," the source underscored the risk posed to one of the world's most strategically important maritime corridors.
The Houthis offered no immediate response to the report.
The mine's discovery came hours after the National Resistance Forces said earlier Saturday that they had destroyed a Houthi boat laden with explosives in Bab al-Mandab, though no additional details were released about that operation.
Yemen has remained locked in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, the news agency, along with several other provinces in 2014 — a takeover that prompted a Saudi-led coalition to intervene militarily in March 2015 in support of Yemen's internationally recognized government.
