Yemeni Authorities Say Houthi Mine Threatens Bab al-Mandab Shipping
(MENAFN) Yemeni authorities say naval forces have discovered and neutralized a sea mine allegedly planted by the Houthi group in a strategically important section of the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
According to reports, a naval unit linked to the government-aligned National Resistance Forces “managed to eliminate the danger of a naval mine planted by the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Bab al-Mandab.”
The explosive device is reportedly located within a “vital area of the international shipping lane” before naval personnel disable it and take measures to remove the danger.
The military source describes the discovery as “a dangerous development in Houthi threats to the security of navigation” in the strategically significant maritime passage.
The Houthis do not immediately issue a response to the allegations.
The incident follows another report earlier Saturday in which the government-aligned National Resistance Forces say they destroy a Houthi boat loaded with explosives in the Bab al-Mandab area, without providing additional information.
Yemen remains embroiled in a prolonged conflict that began after the Houthis seized control of Sanaa and other parts of the country in 2014. The following year, a Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of Yemen’s internationally recognized government.
