Trump Renews Criticism of Canada Over Tariffs

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump renewed his criticism of Canada on Sunday, targeting both tariff policy and the broader US-Canada relationship in a fresh round of public remarks.

"Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also accused Ottawa of long-standing tariff abuse against American farmers, writing: "They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!"

The comments land in the middle of an escalating trade dispute between the two countries.

They follow remarks from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who accused Washington of using new tariffs to "hurt and divide" Canada, describing the measures as "a miscalculation" and pledging dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting Sept. 8.

Carney also said Canada had pulled out of trade talks with the US after Washington issued demands Ottawa found unacceptable. Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered that Canada had abandoned a nearly finalized deal that would have further cut tariffs on Canadian exports to the American market.
