Botswana Blocks Citizens from Joining Russian Military
(MENAFN) Botswana says authorities have prevented several of its citizens from traveling to Russia after they were allegedly targeted by recruitment schemes seeking to draw them into military service in the war against Ukraine.
International Relations Minister Phenyo Butale says 22 Batswana have so far been caught up in what he describes as deceptive recruitment efforts, indicating that the number of citizens being targeted for participation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict is rising.
"Through vigilance and close collaboration with our sister countries, we have managed to stop and return eight of them intercepted at the very threshold of departure at Sir Seretse Khama international airport in Gaborone, Botswana, OR Tambo international airport in Johannesburg, South Africa and Bole international airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ... just moments before they were carried into the machinery of war," Butale told lawmakers on Friday.
According to reports, the individuals were stopped at three airports located in Botswana, South Africa and Ethiopia as they prepared to continue their journeys toward Russia.
Butale rejects the argument that those traveling were simply making an independent decision to join the conflict. He says many of them were instead persuaded through misleading offers and did not fully understand the risks associated with becoming involved in the war.
