Weather System Failure Disrupts Flights at Southern France Airport
(MENAFN) Air traffic at Marseille Provence Airport in southern France faces disruptions on Saturday after a technical failure affects a key weather system used by aircraft to obtain atmospheric pressure information.
The malfunction is detected at around 6 a.m. local time (0400 GMT) at the airport in Marignane, near Marseille, according to airport authorities.
Officials describe the affected equipment as “critical and vital” for aircraft landing operations and, depending on the airline and aircraft involved, for departures as well.
The cause of the technical problem remains unclear.
Airport authorities say operations gradually begin returning to normal from around 10 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) and advise travelers to monitor information provided directly by their airlines.
Of the 35 departures scheduled between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., 21 flights manage to leave, although they experience delays.
Fourteen other flights remain pending departure at around 11 a.m. local time (0900 GMT), according to reports.
