Israeli Officials Fear Netanyahu Seeks Escalation to Delay Elections
(MENAFN) Senior Israeli military officials reportedly fear that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could push for renewed escalation in Gaza as a way to disrupt or postpone the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
According to reports, assessments within the upper levels of the Israeli military suggest Netanyahu may have little interest in seeing the current conflicts conclude and could favor intensified fighting in Gaza as the election draws closer.
The concerns reportedly reflect growing unease among senior officers that political calculations could affect decisions regarding future military operations.
Israeli military officials have stressed that the army does not want to become involved in another conflict unless there is a clear security justification, saying: “We will not enter a new and unnecessary war.”
The reported concerns emerge as political debate intensifies in Israel over Netanyahu’s management of several active fronts. Opposition figures have repeatedly accused him of exploiting security issues to advance political interests ahead of the election.
Netanyahu has also recently intensified his criticism of Türkiye following Israel’s strike on the Abu al-Duhur military air base in northern Syria.
