German Foreign Minister Holds Defense Talks in Kyiv

(MENAFN) German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrives in Kyiv on Saturday for discussions focused on strengthening defense ties with Ukraine and preparing the country for the upcoming winter.

According to reports, Wadephul travels to Ukraine ahead of its Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 24, marking 35 years since the country gained independence.

A major part of the visit centers on helping Ukraine prepare for winter, including the delivery of generators and other energy equipment, assistance for the country’s energy sector, and efforts to safeguard vital infrastructure.

Germany describes Ukraine as an “important security partner” and says its experience offers valuable lessons in “dealing with hybrid threats, modern warfare, and the resilience of state and societal structures.”

The German side says the discussions will therefore place equal emphasis on expanding security and defense cooperation, with particular attention to improving military capabilities, sharing operational experience, and developing long-term security arrangements together.

“Therefore, the visit will focus equally on deepening security and defense cooperation with Ukraine – particularly in strengthening military capabilities, exchanging experiences, and jointly building long-term security structures,” it added.
