Petrol, Diesel Prices Today, August 23: Check Fuel Rates In Delhi, Mumbai & More Amid Iran Tensions

Petrol and diesel prices remained largely steady across major Indian cities on Sunday, August 23, 2026, despite continued volatility in global crude oil markets amid the ongoing US-Iran standoff and uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. State-owned oil marketing companies have continued to shield domestic consumers from sharp international price movements.

According to the latest rates, petrol is priced at Rs 102.12 per litre in Delhi, Rs 111.31 in Mumbai, Rs 113.51 in Kolkata, Rs 107.78 in Chennai and Rs 110.82 in Bengaluru. Among the cities listed, Hyderabad has the highest petrol price at Rs 115.69 per litre, while Chandigarh records Rs 101.54 per litre.

For diesel, the rate stands at Rs 95.20 per litre in Delhi, Rs 97.97 in Mumbai, Rs 99.82 in Kolkata, Rs 99.56 in Chennai and Rs 98.77 in Bengaluru. Hyderabad again records one of the highest rates at Rs 103.82 per litre, while Chandigarh has the lowest rate among the listed cities at Rs 89.47 per litre.

India follows a dynamic fuel-pricing system under which petrol and diesel rates are revised daily at 6 am. However, the last major revision by oil marketing companies took place on May 25, after which prices have largely remained steady.

Meanwhile, global oil prices have gained sharply. Brent crude rose 6.39% during the week, settling at $94.39 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 5.66% for the week and closed at $87.06 per barrel. The uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz continues to remain a key factor for global energy markets.

Against this backdrop, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has pushed for dialogue and a solution through logic, according to reports. Iran's position on the Strait of Hormuz remains an important factor for oil markets, while US officials have said efforts are continuing to keep energy supplies moving through the Persian Gulf.

The reports also note that India and Mauritius recently signed a five-year agreement under which Indian Oil Corporation will supply Mauritius with its import requirements for petrol, diesel and aviation turbine fuel.
