UN Calls Israeli Strikes On Syrian Airbase A 'Very Concerning' Violation
Dujarric made the remarks during a press briefing on Wednesday, according to Al Jazeera, saying the United Nations opposed continued airstrikes in Syria.
“These airstrikes need to stop, and we stand against them,” Dujarric said, according to the report.
The strikes took place early Tuesday at Abu al-Duhur military airbase, which has gained renewed attention amid changes in Syria's security landscape and growing regional military activity.
Israel has not publicly described the strikes as an attack on Syria's sovereignty. However, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation targeted an area where advanced military systems belonging to Turkish forces were deployed.
The Israeli claim could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate detailed response from Turkey regarding the reported deployment or the Israeli operation.
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions over foreign military activity in Syria, where Israel, Turkey and other regional actors have security interests. Israel has repeatedly carried out military operations in Syria, saying it seeks to prevent threats and the transfer or deployment of advanced weapons and military capabilities.
The United Nations has repeatedly called on all parties operating in Syria to respect the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region.
The latest exchange highlights the increasingly complicated security environment in Syria, where competing military interests and the presence of foreign forces continue to create risks of escalation.
