Turkish Artist Showcases Palestinian Struggle Through Darwish-Inspired Exhibition

(MENAFN) An exhibition by Turkish artist Ahmet Yusuf Aygec has opened at the Mahmoud Darwish Museum in Ramallah, bringing together artwork inspired by Palestinian life and the poetry of the country’s celebrated national poet, Mahmoud Darwish.

Named "Posters to the Olive Tree in Exile," the exhibition features 20 pieces produced with colored pencils and soft pastels. Through the collection, Aygec explores themes including hardship, resilience, resistance and everyday experiences in Palestine, pairing his visual work with passages from Darwish’s poetry.

The exhibition was curated by Samed Karagoz with support from the Palestine office of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA). Its central focus is presenting aspects of the Palestinian experience through artistic works influenced by Darwish’s literary legacy.

Palestinian Culture Minister Imad Hamdan attended the opening alongside Turkish Deputy Consul General in Jerusalem Aleyna Karasac, representatives of TIKA’s Palestine office, members of the Yunus Emre Institute in Ramallah, and figures from the Palestinian arts community.

Aygec could not attend the ceremony in person after Israel denied him a visa to travel to the occupied West Bank.

Hamdan described the exhibition as a meaningful cultural project that translates Darwish’s poetry into visual art through the interpretation of a Turkish artist.

He said the artworks convey "messages of resistance, captivity, martyrdom and faith," while illustrating Palestinians’ enduring bond with their homeland "like an olive tree." He added that the works were intended to present the Palestinian cause to audiences beyond the region.

Addressing the artist’s absence, Hamdan said Israel did not want "a witness" to stand alongside Palestinians on their land, while stressing that Aygec’s message from Türkiye had nonetheless reached Palestine through his artistic creations.
