Keiko Fujimori Beats Defeats to be Peru’s First Female President

(MENAFN) After three unsuccessful presidential campaigns, conservative politician Keiko Sofía Fujimori Higuchi is set to make history as Peru’s first female president, assuming office in a country facing intense political divisions and uncertainty.

Her victory concludes a lengthy and highly contested political journey. Following weeks of vote counting and legal disputes, Fujimori was officially declared president-elect on July 4 after narrowly defeating rival Roberto Sanchez. She secured the presidency with 50.1% of the vote compared with Sanchez’s 49.8%, achieving success on her fourth attempt.

Sanchez gained significant backing in the poorer regions of the southern Andes, while Fujimori built her support base through strong results in the capital, Lima, as well as among Peruvians living overseas.

The final election result represented a turning point in one of Peru’s most divisive electoral battles. For years, the movement known as antifujimorismo, made up of voters determined to prevent Fujimori from reaching power regardless of the alternative candidate, appeared to be a major obstacle to her ambitions.

However, after previous defeats in 2011, 2016 and 2021, Fujimori managed to overcome much of that opposition during her fourth presidential bid. Her campaign benefited from widespread frustration among voters over rising crime rates, political instability and prolonged government dysfunction.

Fujimori’s political career began under dramatic circumstances. She entered public life in 1994 at the age of 19, becoming Peru’s First Lady after the separation of her parents, Susana Higuchi and then-President Alberto Fujimori.

Her early association with her father deeply influenced her political image, linking her to his controversial presidency. Alberto Fujimori’s legacy remains highly disputed, with supporters pointing to economic recovery efforts during his rule, while critics highlight allegations of corruption and human rights abuses that led to his imprisonment for 25 years.
