Mexico's Sheinbaum Slams US Visa Revocation as "Political"
(MENAFN) The son of a former Mexican president and a senior figure in the country's ruling party said Friday that the Trump administration has stripped him of his US visa, calling the decision "political" and without merit.
Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran laid out his grievance in a pointed letter posted to social media, addressed directly to President Donald Trump.
"I am writing to you with personal respect and respect for your office to inform you that Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, and Christopher Landau, Under Secretary of State — who has dubbed himself the 'visa revoker' — have ordered that my authorization to enter the United States of America be revoked," he wrote on Instagram.
The revocation lands amid a broader wave of allegations targeting high-profile officials tied to Mexico's ruling Morena party. Beltran, son of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, holds his own standing within the party — he previously served as its secretary of organization before stepping down to run for a seat in Mexico's lower house of Congress.
"As is evident, this decision is political — or rather, petty political and propagandistic — in the Hitlerian style, as there is no reason to justify such arrogant conduct. It is worth emphasizing that these officials have no evidence against me concerning any immoral or criminal act," Lopez Beltran wrote.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum echoed that assessment, framing the visa cancellation as politically motivated. "In my opinion, this cancellation of visas that they have carried out … has an essentially political purpose, because it is not applied equally to all countries if the reason were related to criminal activity," she said at a news conference.
The episode unfolds against a backdrop of escalating US pressure on Mexico since Trump returned to office. Over his second term, Trump has threatened a trade war and airstrikes on Mexican soil, while accusing politicians and governors aligned with Morena of drug trafficking ties and pushing for their extradition.
