Ancient Shipwreck Discovered Off Sicily Coast
Italy's ANSA news agency reported that the Ministry of Culture said the ship likely dates to the first or second century BC and was found about three nautical miles off the coast of Mazara del Vallo.
Hundreds of ceramic amphorae, two lead objects believed to be parts of an anchor, and another lead structure were found at the shipwreck site, according to the report.
Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the discovery as one of the most significant underwater archaeological finds in recent years.
He said further investigations would be conducted to determine the ship's historical and archaeological significance and ensure the preservation of its remains.
The discovery was made during a joint operation involving the Carabinieri and Sicily's maritime archaeology authorities, following reports from members of the public about the suspected location of the archaeological site.
