Fidan Says Egypt May Join Türkiye-Saudi-Pakistan Defense Pact
(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Egypt is likely to become part of the defense framework recently established by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan once several technical matters are settled, describing Cairo as a "natural partner" and emphasizing the continued significance of the four-country regional platform.
"Egypt is already our natural partner on all issues. I believe that at the next stage Egypt will also be among us in the alliance. We already act toward one another as if we were alliance members. There are a few technical issues. Once these are implemented, there is no reason for Egypt not to be part of it," Fidan said during an interview on Saturday.
He explained that Egypt's potential inclusion would strengthen a four-nation regional platform that he expects to remain an important political mechanism.
Fidan also said Cairo's role was broadly recognized by the other members, noting that neither Pakistan nor Saudi Arabia had reservations about Egypt's importance to the regional grouping.
The Turkish foreign minister indicated that the remaining technical arrangements were the main issue preventing Egypt from formally joining the framework, suggesting that its inclusion could take place once those matters are resolved.
