Four IRGC Members Killed in US-Saudi Strikes on Iraq, Iran Reports

Date:

(MENAFN) Four members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) died in overnight airstrikes carried out by the US and Saudi Arabia in Iraq's northern Diyala province, according to Iranian state media on Wednesday.

Iranian media named the four victims as Ali Asghar Astaneh, Abolfazl Motaqi, Morteza Akbari and Amir Abbas Darhamforoush, reporting that all four hailed from the central Iranian city of Kashan. The agency confirmed they died in the joint US-Saudi attack in Diyala but offered no additional details regarding their roles or the specifics of the strike itself.

The report surfaced hours after Iranian media disclosed that a number of wounded Iraqis from the same strikes had been transported into Iran via the Khosravi border crossing to receive medical care.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American and Saudi forces conducted coordinated precision strikes against Iran-aligned targets inside Iraq, stating the operation focused on sites tied to prior attacks on US troops and Saudi energy infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia defended the strikes as an act of self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, launched in response to attacks on the kingdom's petroleum facilities originating from Iraqi territory. Riyadh cautioned that further military action would follow if Iran-backed groups launched additional assaults.

The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) — a coalition of predominantly Iran-backed Shiite armed factions — confirmed that several of its headquarters sustained direct hits in the strikes. The group reported at least 20 of its members killed, 32 wounded, and significant damage to property.

Iran has denounced the strikes as a breach of Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
