Algeria Names First Female Speaker as New Parliament Convenes
(MENAFN) Algeria's newly seated National People's Assembly convened for its 10th legislative term on Tuesday evening, electing Khalida Boufedech as the first woman ever to lead the lower chamber.
Boufedech, a member of the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN), swept the opening session with 302 votes, easily outpacing Amine Allouche of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), who took 57.
Her victory came as little surprise: the FLN had already cemented its dominance in the July 2 parliamentary elections, capturing 91 of the assembly's 407 seats. The National Democratic Rally followed with 74 seats, the Front of the Future secured 56, and the MSP rounded out the top tier with 43.
Tuesday's proceedings opened with a roll call drawn from results certified by the Constitutional Court, followed by lawmakers signing off on a credentials verification report before moving to the speakership vote itself.
Boufedech, born May 27, 1982, brings a medical background to the role. She earned her general medicine degree from the University of Algiers in 2008, then went on to complete specialized training in allergology and clinical immunology in 2019.
