Rubio, Lavrov Hold Rare Talks at ASEAN Summit in Manila
(MENAFN) Top diplomats from Washington and Moscow sat down together Thursday, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held face-to-face talks on the margins of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers' meeting in the Philippine capital.
Before the closed-door session began, both men briefly addressed reporters. Flanking Rubio were US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor, State Department Counselor Dan Holler, and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker. Lavrov arrived with Russian Ambassador to ASEAN Evgeny Zagaynov, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, and Alexey Drobinin, director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Foreign Policy Planning Department.
Journalists in the room pressed both officials with pointed questions — asking Rubio whether he intended to confront Lavrov over allegations that Russia assisted Iran in targeting American forces in the Middle East, and asking Lavrov directly when Moscow would halt its attacks on Ukraine. Neither man answered. Staff quickly ushered the press out before either could respond.
