Hussein Abbass

Hussein Abbass is a full professor with the School of Systems and Computing, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Canberra. He is a Fellow of IEEE, the Australian Computer Society, the UK Operational Research Society, and the Australian Institute of Managers and Leaders. He is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He was the National President (2016-2019) for the Australian Society for Operations Research, and a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts (2013-2015). Prof. Abbass was the Deputy Head (People) of School of Engineering & IT (2021&22) and the Executive Director of the UNSW Defence and Security Applications Research Centre (2006-2010). After 10 years in industry and academia, he joined UNSW Canberra in 2000 and has been a full professor since 2007. He has 300+ refereed publications and a Scholar h-index of 61. His current research focuses on trusted quantum-enabled human-AI-swarm teaming systems, trusted testing of autonomous systems, and trusted-decentralized machine learning and machine education systems and algorithms.
Prof. Abbass served as a Distinguished Lecturer (2022-2024) for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, the Founding Editor-in-Chief (2020-2024) of the IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence, the Chair of the IEEE Frank Rosenblatt Award Committee (2025-2026), a vice-chair of the IEEE Standard 7018 for Security and Trustworthiness Requirements in Generative Pretrained Artificial Intelligence (AI) Models (since 2024), a member (2024) of the strategic planning committee for IEEE PSPB. He led the Steering Committee for the newly established IEEE Conference on Artificial Intelligence (2021-2023), was the Vice-President for Technical Activities (2016-2019) for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, and an ExCom and AdCom member (2016-2019) of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. Prof. Abbass was the founder of the IEEE CIS Australian Capital Territory chapter (2015), Chair of IEEE CIS Emerging Technologies Technical Committee (2013-2014), and the Founding Chair (2003) of the IEEE-NN-EC Task Force on Artificial Life and Complex Adaptive Systems. He serves on the editorial board for journals including the Proceedings of IEEE and ACM Computing Reviews.
